Starting Nursery is an exciting step — for children and parents alike. You do not need special materials to prepare. A few simple habits at home make a real difference.

Build a gentle routine

A few weeks before school starts, move gradually towards school-day timings for waking up, meals and bedtime. Children feel more secure when the day is predictable.

Read aloud every day

Even ten minutes of reading together builds vocabulary, listening and attention. Talk about the pictures and ask simple questions about the story.

Practise small independent tasks

  • Opening a tiffin box and water bottle.
  • Washing hands properly.
  • Putting on shoes and putting things back in a bag.
  • Asking an adult for help when needed.

Play with hands and fingers

Drawing, colouring, playing with clay, stacking blocks and threading beads strengthen the small muscles children later use for writing.

Talk positively about school

Describe school as a happy place with friends, stories and play. If possible, walk or drive past the school together before the first day.

Practise short separations

Short periods with a trusted relative help children learn that a parent always comes back. On the first days, keep goodbyes short, warm and confident.

Protect sleep

Young children need plenty of sleep to concentrate and manage their feelings. A calm bedtime routine helps.
